Blue is the Night

Kelli Grant

This is a first for the Queen of Swingan entire album of original material. Kelli received a BILLBOARD SONGWRITERS "Honorable Mention" for her R&B original, "The Way Love Use to Be" which is included on this album. It’s a musical comparison to a Matisse painting as the lyrics paint a colorful description in each verse of a breathtaking morning filled with happiness as the bridge erodes lyrically to the musical emotion of a broken heart.    ~ Silverfalls Records ~

"Blue Is the Night" is a rollercoaster ride of life’s ups and downs with song titles arranged in a semi-storyline scoring every page turning event into a musical novel filled with; joy, laughter, love and romance, and yes … MURDER! Kelli writes, "Somewhere In Chicago" in a tongue in cheek Frankie & Johnny scenario. Her husband’s name was Johnny but I assure you she did not kill him. This musical journey of life is a pilgrimage mastered through profound lyrics and climatic musical crescendos with one song reflecting that revelation more succinctly, "South Side of Life". The album ends with a song that is actually the beginning pledging undying love, ‘If You Were the One".

TEASER, "I Don't Give A ..." AVAILABLE ON 150 MUSIC PLATFORMS ... Please, tell your friends and Give it a thumbs up!

Although not all the song list are of personal experience they all are apart of life’s adventures in the pursuit of love and happiness. Arranged in a semi-storyline the last song is actually the first of the journey.

And the story begins with the end …

"I Don't Give A ..." is an upbeat Declaration of Independence. Is the beginning of the journey of the pursuit of happiness and love. But there’s a warning. I love you but … "I’ve got to be FREE".

"Somewhere In Chicago", Case in point this is a Frankie & Johnny love story but is not about Kelli & her husband, Johnny. The idea was conceived from an old black & white movie from the 30's. The movie flashed a photograph of some town, maybe Chicago with "Somewhere In Chicago" written over it for a segue from New York  to Chicago. The song has nothing to do with the movie, and to our knowledge Kelli did not kill her husband. ;o)

"I'm Thru with Love" is a ballad of lost love. A story most everyone has experienced. Nothing new. However, the unique key modulation coupled with an emotionally arousing melody delivered in a performance of pure raw emotion as only the Queen of Swing can bring magnifies the heartbreak.

"South Side of Life" Kelli has worked with a lot of older musicians who were apart of the SWING and Rock 'n Roll era's. Their conversation always began with an expression of how things used to be with a question in their eyes of  "where did it go?" Kelli leaves the listener with hope and optimism.

The title cut, "Blue Is the Night" sums up the entire storyline. It is such a well written lyric with the music encompassing the emotions of a broken heart that is oblivious to the surroundings. … "Being alone in a crowd, hearing music that had no sound." This is a magnificent description of a broken heart. But all is not lost as she ends literally, on a high note of optimism with the line, "the morning sun rises and Blue Is the Sky".

"Can’t Get You" gets more indepth of how one can love so deeply that they sees that special someone everywhere. "So tell me how many times do you think of me?" Opening lyric tells you this is what is happening in the world of a broken hearted. But this song does not give the listener optimism. It’s over …

"You Got Me!", changes the pace with a fun 50's style upbeat number that captures that first animal attraction. Opening on a fun sing-a-long as the unsuspecting bystander is "Rocked, Stopped & Swept away, You Got Me!"

"You've Got Something" is from a live performance at the Isle of Capri Casino. From the animal attraction of "You Got Me!" to that first glance dance that sweeps you off your feet.

"B-A-D, BAD" this song is suppose to be funny, although a little promiscuous it's a true confession of desire. We all have seen someone that is so handsome they are simply mesmerizing. Married and very devoted though, we (I) fantasize that ... "just one time, I’d like to be just a little bit, BAD, B-A-D, BAD!"
Number One on Independent charts, 2021.
Re-mastered with more horns

"Loose Woman Blues" a live performance at the Isle of Capri Casino the storyline what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. You may have to be a duck to understand. Hahaha! Think about the previous song ??
"Strut My Stuff"
New cut. Once you realize the marriage, relationship is over as told in "Loose Woman Blues" you take hold of the situation. Get back your confidence. Buy some new threads, get your hair done, rent a hot car to drive by all the old haunts. HONK your horn and wave at everyone. It's called advertisement. You're a HOT MOMMA. Let 'em know you're still alive! …  "Strut My Stuff"
Swing-a-Billy CD, Number One on Independent charts, 2020.

"Boogie Woogie Stroll" is a dance song with all the directions needed to perform the "Boogie Woogie Stroll.' I took piano lessons twice, once at 10 and high school wanting to learn a Boogie Woogie, they didn’t. So, I wrote my own. Originally released on the "Swing-a-Billy" CD it topped Independent charts at Number One, 2020.

"Sometimes I Wonder" Gone but not forgotten? I think everyone remembers their first love. It’s normal to wonder where they are and what they’re doing and especially wonder if they ever think about YOU?

"Don’t Mess with Me" I wrote and recorded, "Don’t Mess with Texas" and under contract with TXDOT which gave me permission to use their logo for marketing the CD. This songs story is taken from that concept except one is about litter and the other is about "trash".  ;o)
Swing-a-Billy CD, Number One on Independent charts, 2019

"The Way Love Use to Be" received a Billboard Songwriters "Honorable Mention" R&B. Based on a coffee commercial of an on going love story, with that first glance of excitement with lightning, fireworks and explosions of anticipation while standing in a pouring rain; or at least that's what I perceived. The verse lyrics are like a Matisse painting, a colorful breath taking description as "the morning sun peaks over the trees and blocks out the black of night, dancing rainbows on a dew glisten lawn reflect a new days light. There was heavy dew on the lawn with the sun’s rays creating a prism thru each droplet. … I hear the birds singing a melody as the world becomes a symphony". Such a magical world we live in. But sometimes it's just a hope, a dream, an illusion and we're left with a memory of "The Way Love Use to Be".
"Honky Tonk Swing" CD topped Independent charts at Number One, 2020

The final cut, but the beginning of the story...

"If You Were the One" is the climatic ending, beginning of a promise made to her life's soulmate. The melody and captivating vocals end on a high note of commitment. The journey has ended but not really. It's not over as we go back to the the first cut "I Don't Give A ..." which reveals there's still a chance. I'm committed but I need to be FREE
