the
TRUE LEGENDS OF WESTERN SWING
THE TEXAS PLAYBOYS
featuring Bob & Tommy Duncan's brother
Bob's Baby Brother Luther J
& Tommy baby brother Glynn
SILVERFALLS RECORDS is so excited to have this treasure available for fans to add to their collection.
Not only are you hearing western swing music as it was originally created by the musicians who created it and worked with the man himself, the King of Western Swing Bob Wills but you are privileged to hear Bob's baby brother, Luther J talking and telling stories to the audience. And the great vocals of Tommy Duncan's baby brother, Glynn.
A magnificent collection. Along with Luke and Glynn other notables include: Casey Dickens, drums; Curly Lewis, Vocals & Violin; Bobby Boatright, Violin; Johnny Patterson, Vocals & Lead Guitar; Clarence Cagle, Piano. Guest Musicians: Rudy Martin, Sax and Bobby Baker, Steel Guitar.
I am so fortunate to have known and worked with these legends. No ... I'm NOT a Playboy. Way too young. Bob had died long before I ever got in the business. But I did run their sound on many of the Reunion shows in Pawhuska, Ok. That's the reason you have this golden opportunity to hear the "boys who made the noise, that's known as Western Swing". (a line from my own hit, "Swing Me Back to Texas" album "Swings & Sings")
The way it worked ...
Luke would sit on the end of the bandstand for 2 reasons. First, to not be in the way; but more importantly, he liked to be introduced and make the trip across the stage to the mic, talking with each step. He and Curly had a great relationship. You can hear Curly laughing. He can hardly contain himself as he laughs and jokes with Luke. Then Luke would start one of his stories before he sang one of his songs. This is PRICELESS!
Luke had his own Western Swing band in California and lived in Las Vegas when I met him. He was very successful as was Bob's brother Johnny Lee in Oklahoma City, OK.
Now, we can only give you a little teaser of the songs and of Luke with his magnificent magical stage presence; however, Silverfalls Records will be very surprised if you don't enjoy every minute and note of this rare gem of musical talent and genius.
The Texas Playboys "LIVE! in Pawhuska"
Other notable members on stage:
Curly Lewis fronts the band and you have the distinct pleasure of hearing him sing. Culry lost voice several years later due to throat cancer. It was devastating for not only Curly but to all of his fans. He had a magnificent voice. This is another rarity to this album that you are sure to enjoy.
Bobby Boatright. Bobby had actually got his first job when Johnny Patterson took the band out on the road when Carl Johnson owned the name, "The Texas Playboys". Lots of stories floating around as to who owned the name and how it has passed. I wasn't there once again but I knew Casey and his wife, Sue very well as my husband was Johnny Patterson. Casey was given the name, The Texas Playboys by Carl Johnson. Carl bought the name from Bob for $10,000. More to the story if you would like to contact me.
Johnny Patterson, lead guitarist/vocalist sings The Tennessee Waltz joined the band in 1962 in Big Spring, Texas as Bob was working his way to Hollywood, Ca. to record for Liberty Records his LAST album with his world famous Texas Playboys. "Bob Wills Sings & Plays". They had a lot of bookings along the way which not only paid salaries but got the band tight for the up coming recording session. Being new on the band Johnny paid close attention to Bob. He had been practicing on the song, "Maiden's Prayer". He didn't realize Bob had heard him.
Bob was known to record a song once at the most twice because he liked to keep the track full of excitement like a live performance. Johnny had not been playing a solo or lead on Maiden's Prayer but all of sudden in the middle of the session Bob waved his bow around in the air and pointed to him to take a ride. You can hear Bob on that album exclaim, "Awh! that's brother Johnny." Some folks believe that it was Johnny Gimble on the session who is a magnificent musician but it is Johnny Patterson.
Glynn Duncan on vocals had worked for Bob thru most of the 50's not necessarily taking big brother Tommy's place because he was a very good at his craft. Glynn also played bass. After Tommy left Bob was very careful about have a singer, or any muscian for that matter becoming too dominant in his music. So, nearly everyone he hired had to sing.
Clarence Cagle Piano. Very sweet man who had a very unique piano style that filled in the holes as they say. But he came front and center when it was his time to take a ride. Clarence had worked quite a bit with Bob's brother Johnny Lee in Oklahoma City, Ok. But did take work at times for Bob.
Casey booked the band which had Stuart Cunningham, from California fronting it. Other members included the legendary, World's GREATEST Rhythm Guitarist, Eldon Shamblin (Rolling Stones Magazine). I met hime too. WOW! Eldon is the one who came up with the legendary chord walking progression on "Faded Love".
I got to sit and talk with him ...
Eldon told me that Bob didn't think a Bass (Upright / Bull Fiddle Bass) was important. So his walking chord inversions up the neck of the guitar were to try and mimic or give the feel of a bass pattern while he was playing the chord rhythm. Tommy Duncan, who had started with Bob in the "Lightcrust Doughboys" played bass as well as piano. Due to the opinion of the man that signed the checks, as Bob says over the mic on the album, "LIVE! in San Antonio", "I sign the checks". (Another album that's a must) It was his band and his opinion but it did changed.
This album, "Live in Pawhuska" was one of 3 recorded during their Reunion shows in our collection featuring "The Former Texas Playboys"
Be SURE and check out the LIVE recording of Bob Wills talking, laughing and joking with the audience and band members on the album.
